Update from the Refugee Sponsorship Committee
We are excited to report that on January 22 we heard from the CBOQ that there was a family of five available for our sponsorship. We had 24 hours to decide. There was immediate e-mail & phone consultation with committee members of both sponsoring congregations, resulting in the unanimous decision to move forward The Almattar family are Syrians who fled to Lebanon from Homs, Syria. We recently learned their names. Fawaz (father) is 31 years old with a Grade 12 education. His wife Manar, is 27 years old, with some secondary school education. They have three children – two daughters Ghazal & Ypumna, ages 7 and 5 and a son, Yamen, age 2. Their language is Arabic, with Fawaz speaking a little French. Their need is classified as “high urgency”. So, now the paper work and process proceed… in both Canada and Beirut. Everyone’s offer of help is noted and much appreciated. We look forward to learning more and to welcoming this family to our community. The likely time of arrival – the end of February.
Clothing for Refugee Family
We will be collecting good used items of clothing for our family. We suggest medium sizes for the man and woman. Children are girls 7 and 5 years and the boy is 2. Please speak to Ruby, Sonia or Nancy Douglas if you can provide anything for them. Many thanks in advance.
