Newcomer Sponsorship Information

We at MacNeill Baptist Church (MBC) are endeavouring to sponsor a refugee family of up to 5 members from the middle east.  We are joining forces with Burlington Baptist Church (BBC) and welcome any donations from friends and our wider community.  The BBC/MBC joint ad hoc committee for refugee sponsorship has been meeting weekly to work on all the details for the application and whole process of sponsorship.  Your donation dollars are needed now in order for us to complete the application so any help with this would be appreciated.  Please check the blogs on this page for updates.

July 19, 2016 Well after many months of planning and preparation ‘our’ Syrian family arrived today …. now, no longer ‘refugees’ but ‘newcomers’!  They travelled by Egypt Air from Amman, Jordan to Cairo, then caught a flight to Toronto.  This was a 20 hours journey in all.  The plane was on time!  The family were greeted inside the terminal by an Arabic-speaking volunteer with Malton Neighbourhood Services, who guided them through the whole landing process, including Immigration & Customs and the provision of their SIN &...

Late Breaking News! Update from the Refugee Sponsorship Committee This Wednesday we got word that The Al Atmeh family will arrive in Canada on July 19th, leaving Jordan on July 18th!  On Thursday we contacted Ahmad by phone (our fourth phone call over the last couple of weeks).   He had already received this news from the embassy in Amman.    All our conversations have been facilitated by Louise’s neighbour, Warda, who is an excellent translator.   This way we have been able to connect with the family, to provide information about who we are...

Late on Friday, May 6 the refugee committee received unofficial word that the Almattar family had withdrawn their application to emigrate to Canada. On May 10th this information was confirmed by CBOQ our SAH (Sponsorship Agreement Holder). The committee members are extremely disappointed by this news as we know so many of you must be. We had developed an emotional connection with this family, even though we had such little information about them; only their names, ages, education and profession, and their home town in Syria.  We were never...

Refugee Sponsorship Update

Update from the Refugee Sponsorship Committee It is disappointing that the Almattars have not yet arrived. We were told to expect them by the end of February. In good faith, we rented an apartment for March 1st and spent the next two weeks lovingly furnishing the apartment with items mainly donated by the two congregations. One team researched typical Syrian foods and purchased these to stock the kitchen cupboards. Cootes Paradise School was visited to pave the way for the two girls to start school as early as possible. So the good news is...

The Middle East Refugee Crisis: What will MacNeill’s response be? The ad-hoc refugee committee, established at the congregational meeting of October 5, 2015, has met on two occasions and in between has fanned out to explore ways and means of responding to this critical refugee situation. As of November 5 we have received a total of $21,700 in pledges, with an additional $1,000 pledged for both 2016 & 2017. (We need to raise $30,000 to sponsor & support a family of five for a year) This is very encouraging. It is evident that there...
